Dachshunds... also known as the wiener dog, or sausage dog, badger dog, doxen and doxie. Long bodies, short legs, big personality. smarty pants & a big bark. An independent hunter of dangerous prey (can you picture that?) they can be brave to the point of rashness, and a bit stubborn (Insert my boy Parker), but their endearing nature and unique look is hard to resist! What's not to love?!
Outside of their adorable appearance a little more information regarding this breed. Dachshunds with shorter legs and longer backs are at higher risk of back injury. They wouldn't mind stairs specifically made for little legs! Young dachshunds can have lots of energy and are very curious. Because dachshunds were bred as badger hunters, they are diggers by nature. Yards to play in are also yards to dig in, protect your gardens! If a dachshund puppy is adopted, as cute as they are, expect to have a few personal items chewed to pieces at some point and a few potty accidents. Puppies! Crate training is a wonderful training tool, if used correctly!
Rescue dachshunds as with any rescue dog/breed can be shy and timid when 1st brought home. It’s important to be very patient when they first arrive. Patience and love at their pace and you will see a totally different personality in no time! They do need time to adjust, especially if they are an older dog, we don't know their back story or can even start to understand what they went through, so just like us humans, they will need patience and time. Don't bring the dog back a few days or weeks later because of a behavior you weren't expecting. I hate to say it, but when you start to feel impatient, look in the mirror! Anyway.....
For people new to the dog world, there are rescues everywhere you go. I recently visited the small town of Idyllwild in southern CA and they have a dog rescue called ARF - Animal Rescue Friends in Idyllwild. Dogs are in need all over! A lot of the shelters that are larger have a mixed selection of dogs that we can love on. And then there are also smaller rescues that are breed specific. Did you know that? I love all dogs, but there are 2 breeds that really tug on my heartstrings. Dachshunds are one of them.
I wanted to put a spotlight on this breed and a rescue that can be found in Northern and Southern CA, Nevada and Arizona. They are called Southern California Dachshund Relief Inc. They are a 501(C)(3) nonprofit that has been rescuing these cutie pies since 1994.
I look at the website, and I start to tear up looking at all the dogs that need homes and reading their stories. I think that's what is needed to get people involved and help with saving lives and that is my mission. I had a dream and I believe it was my father telling me to get involved with dog rescue and at the moment this is one way I want to do it. Exposing these pups and getting them out there to find them homes!!
Read their stories, look at their pictures and get involved!
Here's Lelo & Stitch and they are looking for you!!

~ lelo & stitch are a bonded pair & cannot be separated! ~
Lelo and Stitch were loved and cherished for all their 13 years. Then the family fell on hard times, making taking care of their veterinary needs unaffordable. No local family members wanted to take them in. Because Lelo and Stitch are a very seriously bonded pair, littermates, they came to SCDR together to find a wonderful home.
Lelo and Stitch are very well socialized and get along their fellow foster dogs. The brothers truly love each other and are closely bonded. Having Lelo and Stitch is like having one dachshund with two heads. You never see one without the other close-by.

To find out more information on these two cuties or are only looking for one at the moment, check out their website. Southern California Dachshund Relief Inc. Dachshund Rescue California
🐾 Here's to successful rescuing in 2026! 🐾
